Photography Lesson - "Above The Line"

Above The Line

Paris is jam-packed full of churches, and whether you find them uplifting or insulting, there's no question that architecturally, photographically and (why not) spiritually, they offer many opportunities for reflection.

This rather bald-seeming angel (as often happens with my self-portraits when there's a particularly unsympathetic overhead light...) has a touching uplifted gaze and is completely surrounded by the intricate decoration of the doorway.

I often wonder about the lives of those who created such creatures - I'd love to have chatted with the sculptors responsible for the wonderful array of phantasmagorical faces that graces the Pont Neuf, for example!

Can you imagine the hands of the creator of this little character, gently caressing her fine features and perhaps feeling a real emotion towards this delicately crafted piece of stone?

Photography Lesson - "Art Out Of Art"

"Art Out Of Art"

An art or photo exhibition isn't the easiest thing to photograph. You can't take a straightforward picture of someone else's picture because that is meaningless in terms of creativity. You have to try and capture some sort of interaction between the viewers and the pictures which does actually say something original, whilst still respecting the original work or happening.

This crazy shot has one of the strangely disproportioned visitors emanating enough radiance to herald the second coming, while another shadier figure is content to just look on bemused. Even the photos in the exhibition itself are joining in with the fun. Quite disturbing really.where you can admire all manner of naughties from the past.

Photography Lesson - "Xperimental Xtras"

"Xperimental Xtras"

The story's strange, but then again, so are many librarians. I should know, I'm the progeny of two.

A long time ago, the Biblioteque Nationale de France was in a tricky position. Dedicated to obtaining and archiving every publication in the land, it was frequently embarrassed by some of the racier titles. It placed these 'brown paper bag' items in a special, secret area of the library and merrily named it 'Hell'.

The sinister 'X' which chillingly adorns one side of the new BNF (you know, that horrible building which is supposed to look like four open books... good grief) symbolically tells any passing devils that Enfer is now back in business, at least for the duration of the exhibition, where you can admire all manner of naughties from the past.

Photography Lesson - "A Question Of Balance"

"A Question Of Balance"

Paris is full of these strange buildings that look like extremely thin tall wedges of camembert, and I often wonder what it must be like to be in one of those little rooms way up high hemmed in between the windows at an angle of about 30˚.

This one inhabits a corner, if we can grace it with that name (a spike would be more appropriate), on one of my favourite crossroads, the Carrefour de Buci, in between the Latin Quarter and St. Germain des Prés. This is its story...

Photography Lesson - "Blotches 'n' Blears"

Gliding past St. Sulpice in the 6th, clad in blue jeans and jaunty brolly, a mum pushes her baby through the soggy city streets.

A common enough scene, yet one which will never be repeated, not with that woman, those jeans, that brolly, this photographer not with those puddles, these thoughts or this photo. it's unique. I know. I was there. Where were you?
